My First Week as a Dog Parent: The Highs, Lows, and Cute Moments

My First Week as a Dog Parent: The Highs, Lows, and Cute Moments

Bringing home a puppy is a bit like falling in love—you know your life is about to change, but you don’t fully understand how much until you’re in it. Last week, I became a first-time dog parent to a fluffy little Westie (West Highland White Terrier), not even three months old. And oh boy, what a week it’s been!

If you’re thinking about getting a dog or have just brought one home, I hope this glimpse into our first week together helps you feel a little more prepared—or at least reassured that the highs and lows are totally normal.

🐾 Day 1: The Ride Home

We met at a friend’s house. I remember kneeling down, and he trotted toward me with his tiny paws and curious eyes. He was brave, a little wiggly, and completely irresistible. From that moment, I knew he was coming home with me.

On the car ride home, he curled up on a blanket beside me. No whining. No fuss. Just wide eyes taking it all in. I kept petting him gently, whispering, “You’re okay, little one.” And in return, he gave a tiny sigh and fell asleep.

That night, he explored every corner of the apartment—sniffing, pawing, and tail-wagging with the energy only a puppy can carry. I hadn’t even unpacked his toys yet, but he seemed perfectly entertained by a paper bag and my shoelaces.

🛏️ Day 2: Sleepless But Sweet

The second night was rough.

Around midnight, the whimpering began. I had planned to crate-train him, but hearing those tiny cries felt like heartbreak. Still, I stayed consistent—letting him know I was nearby, offering reassurance without opening the crate.

At 5 AM, we both gave up. He ended up snuggled beside me on the couch. His fur against my arm, his breathing steady—pure peace.

That morning, I realized something: this little dog already trusted me. And that felt bigger than any sleep I lost.

🦴 Day 3–4: Learning Curves and Little Victories

Puppies are cute. Puppies also pee—a lot.

I quickly learned that every nap, meal, and burst of play required a potty trip outside. I celebrated every successful pee like he’d won an Olympic medal. Treats were flying. Praise was over the top. But hey, it worked—by day four, he was already getting the hang of it.

We also had our first bath (which he didn’t love) and tried on his very first Bella & Pal harness. It fit perfectly, was soft on his little body, and didn’t bother him at all. Taking him out felt safer and more manageable—especially when he spotted a butterfly and tried to chase it across the street.

🎾 Day 5–6: Playtime, Personality, and Puppy Zoomies

This is when I really started to see his personality shine.

He’s cheeky, curious, and surprisingly brave. He loves tug toys, hates the vacuum, and stares at the fridge as if it holds all the secrets of the world.

By day six, we had our first full game of fetch. He ran in circles with a squeaky toy, too excited to bring it back—but the joy was contagious. I laughed so hard I cried. He barked once, wagged his tail, and jumped into my lap.

It was also the day I realized: he looks to me now. When he’s unsure, when he hears a sound, when he wants comfort—his eyes find mine.

💗 Day 7: Home

On day seven, something shifted.

The apartment didn’t feel different because I had a dog in it—it felt different because we live here now. Together.

He naps by the window. He follows me into every room. He waits (not-so-patiently) for his meals. And when I pick up his leash, his tail spins like a propeller.

Sure, there were accidents on the rug. I stepped in a puddle at 2 AM. I’ve googled "puppy hiccups" more times than I care to admit. But all of that fades when he curls up next to me, sighs deeply, and trusts that he’s safe.

That’s when I knew: I’m his person now. And he’s mine.

🐶 What I’ve Learned (So Far)

  • Puppies teach patience. And routine.

  • Accidents happen. So do magical moments.

  • You’ll laugh, get frustrated, and fall deeply in love—all in the same hour.

  • A good harness (like the ones from Bella & Pal) really does make life easier—for both of you.

  • The first week is hard, but incredibly worth it.

🛍️ Bella & Pal Favorites from Our First Week

Here’s what made our first week smoother (and more stylish!):

  • OxyMesh Step-In Harness – breathable, easy to put on, and perfect for tiny puppies

  • Leash with padded handle – comfortable for longer walks and sudden puppy pulls

  • Dog travel bag – made our first vet visit a breeze

Bella & Pal products have already become part of our daily routine—and I love that they’re designed with both function and cuteness in mind.

Becoming a dog parent is not just about training and feeding and cleaning up—it’s about learning to care, to listen, and to grow together.
This first week was full of surprises. Some messy. Some magical. But all unforgettable.

If you’re about to welcome a pup into your life, embrace the chaos. Keep your camera ready. Stock up on Bella & Pal gear. And know this:

You’re not just getting a dog. You’re gaining a best friend.
